Over 550 monuments of the Bronze age that are called “Deer Stone” have been identified in the steppe of Mongolia. Among those. it is said that the monuments at the Jargalantyn Am site in Arkhangai province is one of the largest deer stone ritual sites in existence, not only in Mongolia but also in all of Eurasia. We introduce here almost all the deer stones of the Jargalantyn Am Site as well as those of Erdenetsogt site in Bayankhongor where we encountered with the beauty of the deer stones for the first time in 1996. The Jargalantyn Am site is located in Jargalantyn Am of Khanui Bag, Arkhangai province. Archeologists first studied these monuments in the 1970’s and archeological rearch determined that this is one of the largest deer stone ritual sites in existence, not only in Mongolia but also in all of Eurasia. In addition to multiple Bronze Age deer stones, the site has approximately 1400 ritual offering structures. Located in the west portion of the site there is a Kheregsuur monument complex flanked to the east by sacrificial mounds and deer stones and to to the north by three square stone structures built by later cultures. A Mongolian-Soviet Joint Historical and Cultural Expedition first excavated this site from 1989 to 1991, unearthing many important artifacts. It quickly became apparent to the team in 1989 that of the three larger square stone structures that were oriented in a line from east to west, the one to the west had been looted at an earlier period of time. Ten deer stones were found on the top of the ground and around the looted structure. During the 1989 excavation of the adjacent two square stone structures it was also determined that many other deer stones had been reused as building materials for their walls and interior, though these had also been looted at an earlier time. Eighty animal skulls were unearthed at the second square structure while almost 100 animal skulls complete with neck vertebrae were discovered in the third square stone structure. The skulls included five types of livestock (as domesticated dogs were rarely sacrificed) including four horse skulls complete with a pair of bronze bridles with leather pelham. Other artifacts included a cauldron and a spoon with a circular hole. Based on the se artifacts, these later square stone structures were dated between the 8th to 7th cnturies B.C. It is important to understand, however, that the deer stones used in the construction of these monuments date to an period a few hundred years earlier. samples of horse remains from mounds surrounding the deer stones yielded a date of 930-785 B.C. The Mongolian-Soviet team did not return after 1989-1991 seasons, but the excavations which unearthed numerous deer stones were not refilled. As a result, deer stones were left lying on the ground and in the excavation pits, and they were continuously at risk to damage from weather, animals, vandals, and even theft. In order to remedy the situation, the Mongolian tangible Heritage Association, through financial support from the United States Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, came in the summer of 2009 to preserve the deer stones in their original setting and bring awareness to the importance of this site to Mongolian heritage and the study of nomadic cultures.The project was undertaken by special researchers and restoration experts from the Institute of Archeology of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the National Museum of Mongolia and materials conservator from Queen’s University in Canada. The restoration team established the locations for the fallen stones based on the location of 3 deer stones that had survived in their original positions, as well as research on the cultural and religious practices of Bronze Age nomadic peoples. In total 24 deer stones were erected, allowing a glimpse into the landscape of the past (From the information panel).
